Elementary Guide

Position Description

The Elementary Guide will help build out a brand new elementary classroom, in a modern and inspiring studio. The guide will then guide 10-16 children in our inaugural year, delivering an exceptional program that supports the individual needs of the children in accordance with Acton Academy philosophy and vision.

The Elementary Guide will obtain a deep understanding of the Acton Academy education model and design a program and curriculum in which children can develop the skills and self-confidence to become independent and curious learners. This guide will participate in admissions, hiring, studio design, curriculum development and delivery, and other aspects as needed.

The Elementary Guide will help each student find their calling and reach their full potential by:

  • Affirming students, holding them accountable to their promises and to delivering “the best work they can do” as they discover and pursue a calling on a hero’s journey

  • Creating meaningful exhibitions, ceremonies and celebrations that reinforce the rules of engagement, personal and group covenants to provide and strengthen a safe learning community

  • Supporting individual students in setting and achieving their learning goals

  • Acting as a role model as an independent learner on a hero’s journey

  • Creating and launching quests (projects), including daily challenges and curating world class examples

  • Supplying the studio environment and setting up the studio as inspiration for learning

  • Encouraging Eagles to track their progress and create portfolios to show parents, peers, and apprenticeship employers what they are capable of

  • Upholding promises to students, parents and fellow Guides made in relational covenants

  • Passing along each of these responsibilities to students as quickly as possible, so as to allow students to lead themselves

  • Organizing speakers and field trips to inspire students

  • Working to develop close and effective relationships with parents

  • Participating in other activities designated by the Head of School, which may include the application process, workshops, curriculum retreats, meetings, open houses, planning, and other professional pursuits

Qualifications

We are looking for an Elementary Guide with a deep curiosity about life, a lifelong love of learning, a deep respect for children and what they are capable of, and an entrepreneurial spirit (must thrive in a startup environment). The guide will be responsible for facilitating a nurturing and joyful studio culture. We seek someone who has:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership or coaching role working with elementary-aged children

  • A proven excellence in guiding/motivating others, whether in or out of a school environment

  • Montessori, project-based, and/or experimental learning experience

  • A proven excellence in written and oral communication skills and comfort using and learning from a variety of technology tools

  • An entrepreneurial mindset and desire to experiment, evaluate, and improve on everything she/he does

  • A deep respect for all children and empathy for the challenges children face in their lives

  • A strong teamwork ethic, a genuine desire to collaborate with colleagues, and a steadfast sense of professionalism

  • Ability to build relationships with families and coworkers and create a dynamic environment where play and learning happens

  • Pleasant/friendly demeanor and an outgoing personality, with the ability to connect with children in an authentic way

  • Highly professional and dependable

  • A willingness to be coached and mentored

  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem solving skills, including the ability to maintain composure under stress

  • Accredited Montessori Teacher with a MACTE approved Montessori Diploma will be considered an asset

  • Fluency in English is required, fluency in French will be considered an asset


Montessori Guide

Position Description

The Montessori Guide will help build out a brand new Montessori classroom, in a modern and inspiring studio. They will then guide 10-12 children in our inaugural year, delivering an exceptional program that supports the individual needs of the children in accordance with Maria Montessori's philosophy and vision, with a “sprinkle” of the Acton Academy approach to learning. Consistent with that vision, they will observe, track and evaluate individual children's progress. The Montessori guide will step back while the children are working, allowing them to learn from their own discoveries and draw their own conclusions. Rather than supplying children with answers, they will ask them how they would solve the problem, actively engaging children in the learning process and enhancing critical thinking skills.

The Montessori Guide will help each student find their calling and reach their full potential by:

  • Developing and implanting Montessori lesson plans, including developing and creating sensorial Montessori materials

  • Managing Eagles experiences to ensure their individual needs are met

  • Assisting Eagles toward self-directed learning and normalization

  • Maintaining a neat, well organized, and attractive prepared environment consistent with Montessori philosophy

  • Facilitating primary level Socratic group discussions

  • Organizing activities and field trips to inspire students

  • Acting as a role model as an independent learner on a Hero’s Journey

  • Working to develop close and effective relationships with parents, including opportunities to discuss and understand the child’s individual progress

  • Participates in other activities designated by the Head of School, which may include the application process, workshops, curriculum retreats, meetings, open houses, planning, and other professional pursuits

Qualifications

  • An entrepreneurial mindset and desire to experiment, evaluate, and improve on everything she/he does

  • A passion for the Montessori philosophy and the discipline to embody Montessori values

  • A commitment to practicing gentle, compassionate limit setting

  • Ability to build relationships with families and coworkers and create a dynamic environment where play and learning happens

  • A strong teamwork ethic, a genuine desire to collaborate with colleagues, and a steadfast sense of professionalism

  • Pleasant/friendly demeanor and an outgoing personality, with the ability to connect with children in an authentic way

  • Highly professional and dependable

  • A willingness to be coached and mentored

  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem solving skills, including the ability to maintain composure under stress
